From ancient Thracian tombs to a Romanian queen’s palace, the Balchik coast is one of the most storied stretches of the Black Sea.

The Palace of Queen Marie

Built between 1926 and 1937 for Queen Marie of Romania, the palace complex blends Oriental, Balkan and Art Nouveau motifs around a minaret and a Christian chapel. Her favourite “Quiet Nest” villa sits directly on the waves.

University Botanical Garden

Adjacent to the palace, the garden holds over 3,500 plant species, including a famous open-air cactus collection, magnolias, ginkgos and rose alleys — part of the European networks of botanical gardens.

Kaliakra Cape

Just 12 km north, the 2 km-long crimson limestone promontory was a Thracian and Byzantine fortress and the site of a famous 1791 naval battle. Today it hosts dolphins, cormorants and a legend about 40 maidens.
